It’s not as picturesque as the Medina but you’ll find some of the bigger hotel brands. It’s calmer than the centre and home to the Botanic Gardens and Berber Museum.Hivernage: to the south of Geuliz, this is home to the luxurious hotels in the city.Palmeraie: to the north of the city, you’ll find all types of hotels here, including all-inclusive hotels. Palmeraie is a bit out of Marrakech city centre and if you stay there, you’ll probably have to take a taxi back to the city centre. They’re built around an internal courtyard and fountain. The rooms are generally upstairs and offer a view of the roofs over Marrakech. There are tonnes of them in the Medina neighbourhood.If you stay in a riad, you’ll probably be in the heart of the city. However, they’re generally owned by westerners as they bought a lot of them. Don’t expect to experience a Moroccan way of life as even though these are luxurious buildings with Moroccan architecture, locals don’t tend to live in them.Here are a few places worth a look:Riad El Marah: 5 minutes from Jemaa el-Fna, this riad has clean and nicely decorated rooms form around £35 a night with breakfast included.Riad Davia: in the east of Medina, the less touristy part, the Riad Davia is in good condition and has a hammam. You can get double rooms for around £45 a night with breakfast included.Riad Casa Lalla: this is a perfect place to stay in Medina. The riad has a rooftop terrace where you can watch the sunset over the streets of Marrakech. It’s around £80 a night with breakfast included.Dar Assiya: this is a cosy riad away from the centre. A double room costs £130 a night with breakfast included.These prices are indicative and can vary according to the season. We recommend that you book ahead to get better prices.Hotels in MarrakechGenerally speaking, the further from the city centre a hotel is, the cheaper they tend to be. However, this doesn’t mean rooms and suites in the old city will necessarily offer the best services. To choose the right hotel, you need to think about where it is in the city and what time of year you’re going.Generally, a luxury hotel in Marrakech can cost between £100 and £120 a night for a double room. A more typical hotel will cost between £40 and £80 a night for two people.Here are some recommended hotels for different budgets:Ibis Marrakech: say goodbye to Moroccan accommodation if you’re looking for a cheap hotel. A double room costs £45 (breakfast not included).Palm Menara Hotel: By the Majorelle Gardens, this hotel offers double rooms for around £70 a night.Les Jardins de La Koutoubia: for a luxury hotel, you might want this one by the Koutoubia Mosque complete with spa, jacuzzi, and pool. Don’t hesitate to ask if you’re travelling on a budget.Airbnbs in MarrakechRenting a room or an entire property in Marrakech is a good idea if you’re travelling as a family or with some friends. The prices will generally work out around the same as they would for hotels.  You can find accommodation f or between £30 and £80 a night depending on how big the property is and where it’s located. There are plenty of properties available around the Gueliz neighbourhood.Staying with a Host Family in MarrakechTo get to know the locals, why not stay with a family in Marrakech?You’ll be welcomed into a Moroccan family’s home.  Rates tend to include breakfast and another meal, but you usually have to book at least three nights. There are different rates available:Rustic: a private room but you won’t necessarily have a proper bed or access to warm water (generally, they wash in the local hammams). From £20 per day per person (for groups of 5 or more) and £35 per day if you’re travelling alone.Average budget: private room and shared bathroom with warm water. From £25 to £35 per person per day.Comfortable: you’ll get a western-style room with a private bathroom. From £30 to 40 per person per day.How Much Does Food Cost in Marrakech?Food lovers will love the food in Marrakech and Morocco in general. Tagine, couscous, briouat, tanjia, there’s plenty of Moroccan food to whet your appetite. Even though the food’s great, you can eat a meal for around £5. You can easily eat in restaurants every day.Some restaurants offer meals that can cost as much as £50 or £60 but you’ll generally have several dishes to share. Keep in mind that the city is quite expansive so you won’t want to walk across it.Renting a Car in MarrakechRenting a car in Marrakech isn’t a good idea. Driving in Morocco isn’t like driving in the UK and there are often pedestrians, scooters, carts, and goats all over the road. The decision is tough and it is definitely not something you want to rush into. Here are some factors to consider, which will hopefully make your choice a bit easier (I’m a Mac girl myself, but I’ll try and give you the best of both worlds). What is favored at your school? This is a big factor for which computer you should get. Go on your school’s website and see which computer type they would recommend. If the website doesn’t tell you, make sure to ask your tour guide when you see the school. They’ll be able to tell you what they would recommend and also what other students are using. Like at UC Santa Cruz, for example, Macs seem to be the favored choice over PCs. This helps with file sharing (a lot of things are turned in online), and if your teacher is giving an in-class tutorial about how to use a certain program, it helps if you are using the same operating system. If you don’t get the same kind, it’s not the end of the world, but I would recommend going with what the majority of your school uses. If you do end up getting a different type, make sure that you are computer savvy, and will be able to convert files so people who have different computers can see them. I have a Mac, and a friend of mine who had a PC wanted me to correct her essay, and I couldn’t open the file. It took us a while to figure it out (we aren’t very tech savvy), but you definitely wouldn’t want to send a file to a professor that they can’t open. If it’s a big class, they might just fail you for the assignment, so watch out for that!  What’s better for your major? image via www.skctechprep.org Your major is another key thing to consider. As a literature major, the main things on my computer are word documents, so a Mac was a good fit for me. Emma Formato, a first year art/HAVC student at UC Santa Cruz, prefers Macs over PCs. “I currently own a PC and it doesn’t have a lot of the same abilities that Macs do,” she said. I know you may think they will just try and get you to buy their product, but a lot of the people really do want to help you out and will be honest about the capabilities of the computer and what will best fit your needs. You don’t want to have an impulse buy and then have it not be right for your major. Price and Quality A computer is a big investment, so you want to make sure that you are investing in the right thing. Rather, in general, Apple has chosen to build its Mac line around higher-end computers with betterâ€"and more costlyâ€"components,” Pumphrey wrote. So basically if you want a high-end computer, it doesn’t matter much if you pick a Mac or a PC because their prices will be similar. Pumphrey also mentions in the article that comparing the computers is a challenge because of how different they are. Flynn Moore, a third year Earth and planetary sciences student at UC Santa Cruz, said that he prefers Macs because they “are of better quality and have better programs.” This again will be based on opinion, so when picking a computer based on the price, make sure to also keep the quality in mind. You don’t want to purchase a cheap computer that will crap out on you in a year, but you also don’t want to purchase something super fancy-shmancy if you don’t need to.  Choices Another thing that Pumphrey mentioned in his article is that PCs offer more choices than Macs do. Lulit Tadesse, a first year film and digital media student at UC Santa Cruz, said “Macs are what I am used to and it is easy, efficient, simple to use, and modern to me.” Basically, if you know how to work one Mac product, you know how to work them all. PCs on the other hand will give you a large selection when choosing a computer. Pumphrey said that “many consumers see this large selection as a benefit because they’re more likely to find a computer that meets their exact needs.” This is very true. With more variety, you will be better able to pick a computer that goes with your school needs as well as your leisure needs. If you are a gamer, you are going to want a computer that can run games efficiently, as well as have something to bust out your homework on.
